2021 Redistricting process for Nebraska

Hi,

Hope this message finds you well! We are emailing to provide an update on the ongoing 2021 Redistricting process for Nebraska and let you know what to expect in the coming months. I’m sure you already know how important redistricting is for our state, but it’s hard to overstate just how crucial a fair redistricting process is for every Nebraskan’s right to vote.

Last month the Nebraska Unicameral ended its regular legislative session, but before they adjourned they made some important decisions regarding redistricting:

Committee

The 9 member Redistricting Committee was formed. The following state legislators make up this committee:

  • Sen. Lou Ann Linehan, Chairperson

  • Sen. Carol Blood

  • Sen. Tom Briese

  • Sen. Tom Brewer

  • Sen. Suzanne Geist

  • Sen. Steve Lathrop

  • Sen. John Lowe

  • Sen. Adam Morfeld

  • Sen. Justin Wayne

Rules

The Committee adopted its rules for drawing new district maps, which can be found here. A stricter set of guidelines was introduced by Sen. McCollister during the session, but the bill, LB107, failed to find enough support in committee.

Timeline

The map drawing process will not be able to begin until late August, when the U.S. Census data is available to the Committee. Once they draw new maps, all Nebraska legislators will convene for a special legislative session to approve or amend their proposal. Prior to a final vote the Committee will hold a hearing in each Congressional district to collect public input on their draft maps.

This process is very important for the future of Nebraska’s politics- maps motivated by partisan interests would undermine our state’s democracy and government for the next decade. We’ll be reaching out soon to share how to get involved with our work on this crucial issue.
